Co-Stars Who Never Worked Well Together
Published
5 years agoon
Hollywood is a lot like high school – a bunch of completely different people mingling together, with some having a more keen eye for confrontation than others. Most every type of person is represented, but unsurprisingly, they all don’t tend to get along as well as directors would like.
However, it’s not the ones you’d expect who are getting into feuds and petty spats with their casts and crews. In fact, sometimes it’s the quietest ones who actually had the biggest issues on set. No one’s perfect, but Hollywood is more contentious than you’d think. Here are Co-stars who couldn’t get along at all.
Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson
They may have had an intimate, steamy affair on the screen, but the two Fifty Shades of Grey stars were anything but that in real life. Apparently their chemistry together was so terrible that many scenes had to be reshot (and if you thought the finished product was bad, then you can only imagine how atrocious their original performances must have been!).
Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams
The Notebook is among the most adored romantic flicks of the modern era, but that hardly means that the intimacy between the two leads was genuine. According to the movie’s director, there was one day in particular where the two had it out and almost couldn’t complete filming due to their incompatibility.
Claire Danes and Leonardo DiCaprio
Apparently Leo’s renowned professionalism wasn’t really a thing at the time he filmed Romeo + Juliet, because his co-star couldn’t stand his jokes and prankster personality. She even avoided him on set whenever possible, describing him to people as “very immature”. Fortunately his ways have changed!
Anne Hathaway and James Franco
These two are remembered as some of the worst Oscars hosts of all time, but there may be a reason for that. During an appearance on The Howard Stern Show, Franco refused to defend the Devil Wears Prada actress when Stern explained his dislike for her acting style and personality. He claimed that the two rarely talk, even when they’re together.
Lea Michele and Naya Rivera
There was quite a bit of drama on the set of Glee surrounding these two and their “diva-ness” during their tenure. Their on-set relationship took a major dive after several disputes took place, resulting in efforts to get each other kicked off the show. It worked, except not in the way they expected: both ended up getting the boot after five seasons.
Alec Baldwin and Shia LaBeouf
The Orphans co-stars’ differences all began when Shia decided to pick a fight with the famed feudster on Twitter, saying “the theater belongs not to the great but the brash”. Baldwin responded by saying “I don’t think he’s in a good position to be giving interpretations of what the theater is or isn’t about.” Needless to say, there’s some tension there that needs ironing out ASAP before it escalates into something unnecessary!
Ryan Reynolds and Wesley Snipes
Wesley Snipes’ antics on the set of Blade: Trinity have become something of nerd knowledge. Apparently he was extremely difficult to work with and would only communicate with the director using hand-written notes signed “Blade”. The only time he graced the cast with his presence was when he was needed for closeups, which placed a large amount of stress on Ryan Reynolds who was forced to act alone. Because of this, Reynolds formed a great amount of resentment towards Snipes.
Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey
During their time as American Idol judges in 2013, the two singers struck up quite a bit of bad press for their animosity towards each other. Mariah Carey described Nicki Minaj as a “bitter, insecure woman” while Minaj retorted by criticizing the fact that she never had a #1 hit single.
William Shatner and George Takei
It seems inconceivable that two such illustrious members of the U.S.S. Enterprise could harbor animosity for each other, but it’s true. The rift began with Shatner himself, who Takei described as self-centered and in love with himself. In the early days of filming, Shatner would apparently act like he didn’t know his co-star on set, and later reportedly tweaked the script to prevent Sulu from taking command of the Enterprise. The feud has been 40 years in the making and shows no signs of subsiding!
Sarah Jessica Parker and Kim Cattrall
This chick fight all began when Kim discovered that her Sex and the City co-star made more dough than her! If there’s one thing gorgeous women love, it’s more money to make themselves more gorgeous, so it’s really no surprise that Cattrall would get her feelings hurt over the issue.
Bill Murray and Lucy Liu
She may have played one of Charlie’s angels, but in this case Charlie may have more resembled the devil. Apparently Bill Murray halted a scene to tell Liu how terrible of an actress she was. He pointed at Cameron Diaz, then Drew Barrymore, and said “I get why you’re here, and you’ve got talent….but what in the hell are you doing here. You can’t act!” At that remark, Lui lunged at her co-star and viciously attacked him before the two had to be separated to opposite corners of the set, continuing their verbal barrage. You ever wonder why Murray was replaced by Bernie Mac? That’s why.
Chad Michael Murray and Sophia Bush
After becoming acquainted on the set of One Tree Hill, the couple were married (but only for a small time). It all ended when Chad cheated on his wife with Paris Hilton. Despite their separation, the two still had to act together in other films. Talk about an awkward pairing!
Kiefer Sutherland and Freddie Prinze, Jr.
Apparently Freddie’s dealings with Kiefer were so infuriating that it pretty much made him quite acting….or at least take a hiatus. Talking about his experience with Sutherland in the show 24: “It was terrible. I hated every moment of it. Kiefer was the most unprofessional dude in the world. That’s not me talking trash, I’d say it to his face, I think everyone that’s worked with him has said that.”
Harrison Ford and Josh Hartnett
During the entirety of filming Hollywood Homicide, Ford and Hartnett never once made actual eye contact and never could find common ground during the movie’s promotional tour (after all, they never did see eye to eye, am I right?). Words like “punk” were used to describe Hartnett while “old fart” was a term thrown around for Ford. In short, it seems like there was a definite generational gap there.
Will Smith and Janet Hubert
Some pretty bad blood formed between Janet Hubert and her younger Fresh Prince co-stars, particularly with Will Smith. According to the original Aunt Viv herself, he would hurl all kinds of insults at her and would constantly remind her that nobody liked working with her. The entire situation blew up on set and resulted in Hubert being replaced.
Charlie Sheen and Chuck Lorre
Charlie Sheen had a heated beef with someone? Imagine that. Apparently he took great offense at his Two and a Half Men co-star’s suggestion that he’d be disappointed if Sheen outlived him. In true Charlie Sheen fashion, he retorted by unleashing a host of rather unsavory and hateful comments.
Bill Murray and Harold Ramis
I guess Bill Murray is just a tough guy to work with! The falling out with his Ghostbusters co-star occurred on the set of Groundhog Day during a difference of opinion regarding the movie’s philosophical vs. humorous tone. Ramis insinuated the entire thing was sparked by emotional distress by Murray bring his relationship baggage on set with him.
Betty White and Bea Arthur
The cast of Golden Girls hardly got along with each other like their respective characters did. Bea Arthur apparently despised Betty White for no apparent reason, though it was speculated that she envied White’s television fame and cheery attitude. Well, Betty definitely had her beat in that department, especially considering the woman is 95 years old and still at elite celeb status.
Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey
It seems almost unfathomable, but yes….the dirty dancers themselves apparently had zero chemistry with each other. Swayze described his co-star as highly emotional and prone to silly moods. At least they were able to fake it enough to provide some semblance of chemistry on the screen!
Julia Roberts and Nick Nolte
They may have played love interests in I Love Trouble, but these two stars really did love trouble over respect for each other. Julia described him as both “charming and nice” but also used the term “disgusting”. The two disliked each other so vehemently that they had to film their scenes separately, using stand-ins to produce some sense of chemistry.
Shia LaBeouf and Tom Hardy
These two played both brothers and bootleggers in the movie Lawless, so perhaps this was just an example of some brotherly roughhousing as well as getting into their rough-and-tough characters. According to the story, the two had it out on set when Hardy screwed around with him a bit too much, resulting in LaBeouf throwing a punch or two.
Teri Hatcher and Marcia Cross
This just proves how much actors have to really accentuate the “act” part! Despite being BFFs on the show Desperate Housewives, Teri and Marcia couldn’t be more opposite when the cameras stopped. Factors like jealousy and dominance were in play (you know, the usual stuff).
Billy Baldwin and Sharon Stone
The two sensual lovers in the 1993 thriller Sliver were anything but passionate on set. Stone hated her co-star so much that she would bite his tongue during their lovemaking scenes, which would leave him unable to speak for up to a week!
Richard Gere and Debra Winger
Just because they loved each other on screen didn’t mean that they had the same feelings off set….or even basic respect for each other! Winger disliked working with Gere (she referred to him as a “brick wall”) and considered An Officer and a Gentleman to be one of the worst experiences of her professional career.
Charlie Sheen and Selma Blair
Charlie Sheen, yet again! Apparently his Arrested Development co-star couldn’t stand his work ethic (along with the rest of working Hollywood) and complained about it. However, it only got her fired. The worst part was how she found out: Sheen texted her with the news – accompanied with a very derogatory term for a woman’s anatomy.
Shannen Doherty and Jennie Garth
Their characters on Beverly Hills 90210 were divas, and so were their attitudes in real life….at least with each other. The two couldn’t stand each other and even admitted to wanting to claw each other’s eyes out like alley cats on numerous occasions.
Richard Dreyfuss and Robert Shaw
The two stars of the classic shark epic Jaws just couldn’t seem to figure out the formula to working well together. The two bickered constantly, and it was speculated that Shaw was envious of the young Dreyfuss who would hook up with the ladies all across Martha’s Vineyard. In fact, Shaw would become so jealous sometimes that he would snatch Dreyfuss’s coffee out of his hand and dump it overboard. Talk about a testosterone stand-off!
Lars Von Trier and Bjork
Director Lars Von Trier is pretty well known for working closely and intimately with his actors to produce the perfect performance, but his Dancer in the Dark actress didn’t appreciate it very much. The Icelandic singer ended up despising him so much that she would spit on the ground rather than greet him….and there’s even a story about her eating her sweater out of frustration after a rather difficult day. Talk about a stress eater!
Kenny Baker and Anthony Daniels
It seems inconceivable that the galaxy’s most beloved droid duo didn’t have a very good relationship (although they bickered like an old married couple in the movies). Though there weren’t exactly any punches being thrown, the two just never could seem to fit well together….the late Kenny Baker described Daniels as “boring” and “infuriating”. Unfortunately for them, the two had to collaborate together on seven Star Wars movies!
Bette Davis and Joan Crawford
There are co-star disagreements, and there are plain old chick fights. To say that Davis and Crawford couldn’t stand each other is an understatement: the two hated each other! Both would call the director of their movie Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? on a nightly basis and spew all kinds of language describing the other. Crawford even went so far as to strap a weightlifting belt around herself for one scene in which Davis had to pick her up out of bed! That’s some pretty heavy-handed rivalry shenanigans going on there!
Tommy Lee Jones and Jim Carrey
During filming of the 2nd-worst Batman movie, Tommy Lee Jones (who is notorious for being difficult to work with) refused to sit with his co-villain co-star during lunch. The legendary funnyman took such offense at this that he vowed to steal every scene he had with the famed actor. Villainy on and off the screen!
Lily Tomlin and David O. Russell
Director David O. Russell is known for his unique direction in which he attempts to elicit the greatest performances from his actors as he can. Well Lily Tomlin’s reception to his directing style was poor, to say the least, as the two constantly hurled F-bombs at each other. Yet every time they associate now it’s all hugs and smiles. Go figure.
