Tesla is recalling more than 40,000 2017–2021 Model S and Model X vehicles over a potential failure of power steering assist.
A firmware update caused some vehicles to lose power steering assist after riding over rough terrain or potholes, according to a filing with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Tesla identified 314 vehicle alerts for the issue as of Nov. 1, but said it is not aware of any injuries or deaths. The recall requires a software update to recalibrate the system.
A loss of electronic power steering assist doesnt affect steering control, but could require greater effort, increasing the risk of crash.
