Auto Workers Rally On as Deadline Approaches for Detroit Three

On Friday, United Auto Workers President Shawn Fain will reveal whether the union’s one-week strike, initially affecting three major plants – Ford, General Motors, and Stellantis – will be extended.
Members across several U.S. states held rallies on Thursday, just one day ahead of the looming Sept. 22 deadline at noon. Workers and supporters gathered at one of Ford’s assembly plants in Louisville, Kentucky, and approximately 100 others in Chicago held up signs that read, “Stand Up, End Tiers,” according to reports.
The seven-day standoff has raised concerns about disruptions in production, supply chains, and their impact on the U.S. economy.
Fain issued a warning on Monday, Sept. 18 that members would not back down if there isn’t “serious progress” made in contract negotiations.
“Autoworkers have waited long enough to make things right at the Big Three. We’re not waiting around, and we’re not messing around. So, noon on Friday, Sept. 22, is a new deadline,” Fain said in a video message.
